Mi Gente!!

It was National Hispanic & Latino Heritage Month from September 15-October 15 and the celebration doesn’t stop there with people across the globe celebrating their culture. Throughout my life, I’ve always embraced my inner Boricua, and continue to write about the rooted location of Spain in which some of my ancestors thrived in. The cultural influences of the Iberian Peninsula are celebrated in the color of my skin, the questions about culture, and my understanding of the complexity within Latinx and/or Latine culture. People in the US also love celebrating their Latino heritage and roots with laughter, art, and community.

Interestingly, many that carry on Latino culture prefer the term Latine compared to Latinx. Research findings indicate that “More recently, a new, gender-neutral, pan-ethnic label, Latinx, has emerged as an alternative that is used by some news and entertainment outlets, corporations, local governments and universities to describe the nation’s Hispanic population.” It’s relevant to take a closer look at the diversity and dynamics with Hispanic culture that keeps us thriving. I’ve engaged in conversations with family, friends, and colleagues about the underlying differences of terms in Latine and Latinx. I wholeheartedly accept the diversity in Latino culture and the validity that comes with one’s experience in the world.

As a writer, I love being part Latina and Black, and sharing stories from Mi Gente means a lot, including our history. According to the National Museum of the American Latino (2024) “the Latino presence in America spans centuries, predating Spain’s colonization of what is now part of the United States and they have been an integral part of shaping our nation since the revolutionary war.” Mujeres across the US embrace the beauty in being Hispanic and Latina in the most distinctive ways in family, love, work, and community. These are just a few notable ways that people across the US display admiration for their own heritage and others. We feel a sense of gratitude for the wonderful cultural contributions to society that help our children to understand love, beauty, family, and community. We keep in the current victories and challenges that Latine immigrants and migrants may face. It’s about creating space for dialogues about important topics that amplify the voices of Latino/Hispanic parent voices. Happy National Hispanic & Latino Heritage Month!!

Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana y Latina

Mi Gente!!

Fue el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana y Latina del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre y la celebración no termina ahí: personas de todo el mundo celebran su cultura. A lo largo de mi vida, siempre he abrazado lo Boricua en mi y sigo escribiendo sobre la ubicación arraigada de España en la que prosperaron algunos de mis antepasados. Las influencias culturales de la Península Ibérica se celebran en el color de mi piel, las preguntas sobre la cultura y mi comprensión de la complejidad dentro de la cultura latina. A la gente en los EE. UU. también le encanta celebrar su herencia y raíces latinas con risas, arte y comunidad.

Curiosamente, muchos de los que llevan la cultura latina prefieren el término latíno en comparación con latinx. Hallazgos de una investigación indican que “Más recientemente, ha surgido una nueva etiqueta panétnica, neutral en cuanto al género, Latinx, como una alternativa utilizada por algunos noticias y entretenimiento medios, corporaciones, gobiernos locales y universidades para describir la población hispana del país”. Es relevante observar más de cerca la diversidad y la dinámica de la cultura hispana que nos mantiene prosperando. He entablado conversaciones con familiares, amigos y colegas sobre las diferencias entre los términos latíno/a y latinx. Acepto de todo corazón la diversidad de la cultura latina y la validez que conlleva la experiencia de cada uno en el mundo.

Como escritora, me encanta ser parte latina y afroamericana, y el compartir historias de Mi Gente significa mucho, incluida nuestra historia. Según el Museo Nacional del Latino Americano (2024) “la presencia latina en Estados Unidos abarca siglos, es anterior a la colonización española de lo que ahora es parte de los Estados Unidos y ha sido una parte integral de la configuración de nuestra nación desde la guerra revolucionaria”.
